Improve a material risk
Example: Improving controls for lifting failure
Client Problem (example)
A global manufacturer has experienced multiple lifting events and near-misses involving cranes, hoists and rigging across multiple sites. Investigations have shown that the material risk controls for lifting failure vary in scope, quality and effectiveness across its sites.
The client seeks to rapidly improve the quality and effectiveness of its lifting controls across its sites, however it wants to avoid the delays, expense and distraction associated with sending external advisors to each site.

Client Objective
The client seeks to:
- Rapidly improve the scope, quality and effectiveness of its lifting controls across its manufacturing sites.
- Involve external lifting expertise to ensure it is implementing best practice lifting controls.
- Minimize external advisor costs, travel and site distraction in implementing the improvement.
- Complement (not duplicate) its existing learning and risk management systems.
How Method8 is used to meet the client’s objectives
Aspire
- The client assigns an Accountable Person and Method8 assigns a Practitioner to work with them.
- A workshop is undertaken with the clients external lifting expertise and internal experts to align on best practice lifting controls and verification / testing requirements.
- The best practice lifting controls are transformed into an engaging, and measurable, Method8 formative assessment.
- The assessment contains education materials specific to lifting controls.
- The assessment is designed to measure both employee understanding of, compliance with, and effectiveness of, the lifting controls.
- Multiple Method8 tools / techniques are built into the assessment to improve employee engagement and insight.
- The client defines an accountable person (typically the Lifting Risk Owner) at each of their sites to lead the assessment and identifies the preferred mix of team members (internal and the external lifting expert) assigned to undertake the assessment.
- The client integrates the Method8 assessment into its existing:
- Learning Management System (LMS) lifting training course (completion of the assessment is logged in the LMS)
- The Risk Management System is updated as a part of gap closure and includes on-going use of the Method8 assessment.
Assess
- The client deploys the Method8 lifting controls assessment to its manufacturing sites.
- The assessment triggers some pre-work on the part of team members—including data and fact collection to inform the assessment.
- The assessment is taken as a team (with the external expert attending virtually)—building a deeper understanding of the controls and self-assessing current compliance and effectiveness of the controls. Significant team discussion and debate unfolds during this self assessment process.
- Method8 platform functionality is used to escalate questions / blockers that require clarification from the client and external expert.
- Teams identify the actions required to close gaps to the lifting controls and identify blockers that will require internal leadership support.
Act (and AI)
- Method8’s AI agent is used to review maturity scoring, gaps, actions and other data to provide enterprise-level insights.
- The clients confirm and initiate gap closure actions across each site and, if required, at an enterprise level.
- Clients track gap closure and determine the next assessment point.
- Clients uses the assessment data to inform future audits as well as further improvement in training and risk controls.
