What is formative assessment?

Formative assessment is a learning process designed to monitor student understanding, provide feedback, and identify improvements.   The concept and learning technique emerged in the 1960’s and 1970’s.  Research since the 1990’s has consistently reinforced that learning outcomes are improved through the use of formative assessment.

Our Process - How it works

Every Method8 project follows three steps:

  • Customers define the outcomes expected and translate this into a formative assessment (with the support of a Method8 Practitioner) that can be deployed across an organization. Objectives include:

    • Defining success outcomes and measures.
    • Defining the audience.
    • Defining learning outcomes.
    • Defining the design of the assessment.
    • Building the assessment and publishing it ready for deployment.
  • Customers deploy their formative assessment in their organization—this could be to one team or to hundreds of teams. Objectives include:

    • Creation of improvement campaigns—defining outcomes over a period of time.
    • Assignment and deployment of a formative assessment.
    • Teams take the assessment—learning, collaborating and identifying gaps and opportunities and creating actions.
  • Customers review the results of formative assessments, leverage AI to generate insight and take actions to close gaps and improve. Objectives include:

    • Review of formative assessment insights—through the use of our agentic AI.
