In 2020 the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management was released with all International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) members agreeing to implement the new industry standard.  Multiple documents were released to help members understand and implement the standard including the standard, guidance document, conformance protocols and other training.

A client is struggling with how to effectively, and efficiently, implement the industry standard and supporting material across its multiple, geographically-dispersed, operations and how to demonstrate on-going compliance with the industry standard.

Client Objective

The client seeks to:

1. Implement the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management across its operations.
2. Create a simple, efficient, and engaging process to implement and sustain compliance with the standard.
3. Reduce the project management, administrative, audit and travel burden required to implement and sustain the standard.
4. Provide clear, measurable, evidence of compliance to management and other stakeholders.
5. Complement (not duplicate) its existing learning and risk management systems and training

Aspire

1. The client assigns an Accountable Person and Method8 assigns a Practitioner to work with them.
2. The ICMM Industry Standard is transformed into an engaging, and measurable, Method8 formative assessment.
   • The assessment contains education materials specific to the topics, principles and requirements in the industry standard.
   • The assessment translates the Industry paper-based documents into a digital, measurable, assessment tool.
   • Multiple Method8 tools / techniques are built into the assessment to improve employee engagement and insight.
3. The client defines an accountable person at each Operation to lead the assessment and identifies the preferred mix of team members (both internal and external) assigned to undertake the assessment (most Method8 assessments are taken as a team).
4. The client integrates the Method8 assessment into its existing:
   • Learning Management System (LMS) training module (completion of the assessment is logged as a course)
   • Risk Management System material risk control (completion of the assessment is a control activity)

Assess

1. The client deploys the Method8 Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management assessment to its Operations.
2. The assessment is taken as a team—building a deeper understanding of the requirements and self-assessing current compliance / alignment / effectiveness with the standard.  Significant team discussion and debate unfolds during this self assessment process.
3. Method8 platform functionality is used to escalate questions / blockers that require clarification from client or industry expertise.
4. Teams identify the actions required to close gaps to the standard and identify blockers that will require internal leadership support.

Act (and AI)

1. Method8’s AI agent is used to review maturity scoring, gaps, actions and other data to provide enterprise-level insights.
2. The clients confirm and initiate gap closure actions across operations and, if required, at an enterprise level.
3. Clients track gap closure and determine the next assessment point.
4. Clients provide feedback (and data as required) to Industry bodies to clarify requirements, verify compliance and continuously improvement.
